King Saul is an interesting character. He was not only a member of one of the smallest tribes of Israel, but one that due to their sin had nearly been wiped out. Despite his tribe’s tarnished reputation, when Israel asked for a king, God chose this man to be their first official king.
Tall, handsome, possessing noble bearing, and standing head and shoulders above the crowd, he was all that Israel had hoped for in a king. From all appearances this was the man that they were looking for. His majestic form was indeed a worthy icon that should inspire jealousy and fear in the surrounding nations as he led his troops into battle. With pride they could parade before this man of regal bearing, confident that he was the equal of any earthly monarch.
